‘Inspiring more Girls to Enter and Succeed in STEM Fields’
The Bryn Mawr School
“I am excited to see so many girls participating in the FAMES® program with sincere interest and asking great questions. These are our future STEM professionals.” Professor Mary Bowden, Dept. of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Astronaut Dr. Sandra H. Magnus enthralled the entire class of The Bryn Mawr School with her message ‘Find your dream and follow it’
FAMES® | Finance, Arts and STEM: One of the most important messages we can deliver to young people about STEM education is one of hope and persistence. The students of The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore heard such a message from a woman of extraordinary achievement, NASA astronaut Dr. Sandra (Sandy) H. Magnus. Magnus is a STEM star having received a Ph.D. from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech and making three trips to space, two on Space Shuttle missions and one tour on the International Space Station (ISS). She spent four and a half months in space on board ISS. Her knowledge and dedication to space research brought her into a position of leadership as Deputy Chief of NASA’s Astronaut Office and later as the Executive Director American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Ms. Lynnetter Drake, Lockheed Martin celebrating Women’s History Month at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, RE #14, NE DC
FAMES® | Finance, Arts and STEM: We celebrated Women’s History Month at the Richard England 14 Boys & Girls Club in NE DC. The Brach Manager noted,
“Lynette Drake had a wonderful STEM presentation in SMART Girls this week. Thank you to FAMES for providing this great speaker.” (March)

Ms. Alice Bowman, New Horizons Mission Operations Manager at APL, intrigued the students of The Bryn Mawr School with her presentation “New Horizons: Mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt.”
FAMES® | Finance, Arts and STEM: We are honored to have Ms. Alice Bowman, the Mission Operations Manager (MOM) of NASA’s New Horizons Mission, serve as a role model to the students at The Bryn Mawr School. About eighty students from fifth and sixth grade attended the presentation. The students were intrigued by New Horizons, the first mission to Pluto, and the spacecraft’s New Year’s Day encounter with Ultima Thule in the Kuiper Belt, a distant zone of the solar system beyond the orbit of Neptune. Impact on students: The students learned about the mission and that the girls can be scientists and engineers if they follow their dreams. In fact, her presentation inspired both future STEM and arts professionals. Ms. Bowman is a member of the Principal Professional Staff at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Maryland. She is dedicated to STEM education for girls and minorities. She earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and chemistry from the University of Virginia. She is an associate fellow of AIAA. (041719)
Dr. Nicola Fox Captivates the Students of The Bryn Mawr School with her presentation: Understanding the Mysteries of the Sun
FAMES® | Finance, Arts and STEM: The Sun sustains life on Earth, but we know surprisingly little about it. Students from The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, a K-12 independent school for girls, learned a lot about our Sun from Dr. Nicola Fox of JHU APL, the project scientist for NASA’s new Parker Solar Probe. The Parker Probe, a mission some sixty years in the making, was launched on August 12, 2018 towards a direct encounter with the Sun. It will be the first satellite to enter the sun’s corona, where the material is heated to about 3 million degrees. Dr. Fox spoke with seventy students attending 4th and 5th grade, explaining the mission of the Parker Solar Probe and some of the challenges that the scientists and engineers working on the project encountered. Dr. Fox showed video clips of women scientists and engineers working on the probe which enthralled the students. (042418)
NASA, NOAA and Weather Satellites: FAMES® celebrates International Women’s Day with Dr. Felisha R. Lawrence serving as a role model at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington
FAMES® | Finance, Arts, and STEM: The theme of 2017 International Women’s Day is “Be Bold for Change”. This theme is one of inspiration and there can be no greater source of inspiration than Dr. Felisha Lawrence and the encouragement she recently provided during the FAMES program to the students at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington (BGCGW). Lawrence has achieved a great deal in her career as a young engineer. She presented a program on weather monitoring from ground-based and space-based sensors through video. Students learned about the extraordinary sensitivity of many different types on sensors and the kinds of data they provide to meteorologists. They also learned about the growing importance of weathering monitoring in terms of ensuring human safety as well as the economic impact that adverse weather can have on society. (030817).
Micro Air Vehicles and Electric Propulsion: FAMES® teams with Women in Aeronautics and Astronautics, UMD to celebrate National Engineers week at Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington
FAMES® | Finance, Arts, and STEM: February’s National Engineers Week provided a unique opportunity for FAMES® to partner with the University of Maryland’s Women in Aeronautics and Astronautics (WIAA) to conduct a presentation on Aerospace Engineering Careers. The presentation provided a comprehensive overview of emerging aerospace technologies and the many ways in which engineers conceive and implement new ideas. Speaking were two young aerospace engineers from WIAA, Elaine Petro and Elena Shrestha; both pursuing PhDs at UMD. Petro’s study of electric propulsion systems for space missions proved to be the perfect platform for an exciting look inside the future of space exploration. Shrestha’s academic focus is on new types of air vehicles and she captured the students’ attention by talking about the development of Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs), including the “Cyclocopter” design she is currently working on.
