Norman M. Wereley

 

Dr. Norman M. Wereley is the Minta Martin Professor and Chair of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland (UMD). His research focuses on application of smart structures and materials to aerospace systems. He is the Editor of the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures and associate editor of Smart Materials and Structures and AHS Journal. He was awarded the ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Prize and the SPIE Smart Structures and Materials Lifetime Achievement Award. Prof. Wereley is a Fellow of AIAA, AHS, ASME, IOP, and SPIE. Prof. Wereley has been a leader in STEM and K-12 Outreach activities on behalf of the AIAA National Capital Section. He is a recognized leader in curriculum innovation including bringing hands-on experiential learning into the classroom, innovative laboratory curricula, and developing comprehensive programs for research-based undergraduate education. Dr. Wereley has served as the Student Symposium Chair at the AIAA Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference, and has contributed leadership and guidance to several student symposia for SAMPE, AIAA, SPIE, and ASME. He has been recognized for his extensive service to Education, STEM, and Outreach through the AIAA Sustained Service Award, the UMD Clark School of Engineering Award, and the AIAA National Capital Section’s Marvin C. Demler Award. He holds 19 patents and is the co-author of over 200 articles in technical journals.

Dr. Wereley received M.S. and Ph.D. from MIT.
