FAMESTM began implementing its program in partnership with Science Application International Corporation (SAIC) based in McLean, VA, and the National Science Center (NSC). The NSC, which is the product of a partnership between National Science Center, Inc. and the U.S. Army, seeks to improve technical literacy and to encourage interest in math and science careers. Through this team effort, the NCS Science to Go van introduced science to children in the DC after-school program through live experiments and demonstrations. Difficult science concepts such as atom composition, electricity, AC and DC currents, insulators and conductors, internal combustion engines, four states of matter, plasma energy, and static electricity, were demonstrated in a manner and at a level that engaged the children – so much so that several students stayed afterwards to ask questions, despite the NBA video game in full session on a big screen TV in the next room! The DC program was a huge success. The experience confirmed to Avik that engaging kids is a better method of teaching science.
Army Chief Information Officer, Lt. Gen. Steven W. Boutelle, was pleased to hear that the students participated in and enjoyed the demonstrations. “NSC partnerships like this one with Learn for Fun and SAIC provide inner city students with exciting experiences they may otherwise not be exposed to,” said Lt. Gen. Boutelle. “Together, we are preparing America’s youth for the future.”
